HISTORY
Baron Eric Von Emmelman was a German flying ace who was shot down on October 12, 1918 while fighting in World War I. He crashed in the Wausau Swamp, in Poland. Despite being mortally wounded, the memory of his wife and his unborn child kept him alive long enough for Mother Nature to notice him and decide to make him her champion. Over the next two decades, Von Emmelmann's body fused with the plant matter of the swamp, transforming into a massive humanoid hybrid of man and plant. Initially, the creature seemed clumsy and indiscriminate in its violence, but eventually it became clear that its targets were always evil men.

Initially, the creature seemed clumsy and indiscriminate in its violence, but eventually it became clear that its targets were always evil men.
Eric's mind was damaged by the process and because of this, it was virtually impossible for the creature to communicate with humans (those who didn't run away at the sight, of course). The fate of Von Emmelmann's wife and child is unknown...
The swamp monster possessed superhuman strength, was extremely difficult to injure, and could eventually reform if he was destroyed. There was a mistaken belief that the creature needed blood to survive (due to the desiccated corpses it left behind), however, the truth is that the Heap only needs to feed on animal life when it is in "walking" mode. It is very capable of performing and sustaining itself via photosynthesis, but to do so, it needs to be subject to nutrient-rich soil.
