Sandford Wax is known to the public as a genius inventor and philanthropist. However, secretly he is the greatest criminal mind of all time. Wax built a suborbital plane that was hijacked in Chinese airspace by the criminal known as the Unholy One. Sandford used a special suit and other inventions (such as a stun gun) to successfully rescue both the aircraft and the pilot (Captain Henry Dare) which earned him worldwide fame as a hero and the public favour, even though he only did it for selfish reasons. The newspapers nicknamed him the Sky Wizard. As a result of this incident with the Unholy One, Wax created the criminal syndicate known as the Clutching Hand, mainly to ensure that the plans of some members would not interfere with those of others. Wax is always seconded by his servant, Keeshan. a deadly thuggee assassin.
