A scientific expedition made up of Doctor Harry Thurston, his assistant Tom Kinsman and the anthropologist Joyce Church, heads in a seaplane piloted by Joyce's fiancé, Robert Blake, to a remote island in the Pacific, where they must study the strange properties of the terrain. and some mysterious ancient remains. The foreman of the excavation is the fearless adventurer Jack Bradley.
Everything seems to be proceeding normally, until the excavation is sabotaged and a terrible explosion occurs.
Tom Kinsman and the native workers are seemingly wiped off the face of the earth. But when the dust cloud settles, Jack, Joyce, Bob and Harry are still standing, albeit somewhat changed...
Somehow, the strange materials of the island combined with the energy of the explosion and something in the DNA of the four made them return from nowhere, transformed into elemental creatures, living representations of the four states of matter: Gaseous (Joyce ), Liquid (Blake), Plasma (Thurston) and Solid (Bradley).
After a moment of desperation, they discovered that they could control this fantastic change simply with force of will. Using their newfound abilities, the four found and confronted the saboteurs, who turned out to be Lava Man and his acolytes. After defeating them, the four decided to stay together, forming the United States of Matter and choosing colorful nicknames by which they would be known: Fearless Flint, Hydro-Man, Blue Flame, and Ariel.
