Miss Espionage's mother, was a former communist spy who fell in love with an american diplomat and defected. When Athena (Ms. Espionage) and her brother were still children, the KGB found her mother and kidnapped her and the two children, taking them back behind the Iron Curtain. Jeanne tried to escape with her children, but she only managed to save little Athena, at the cost of her own life. Miss Espionage's brother remained a prisoner of the communist regime. Before Jeanne died, Athena promised her mother that she would one day return to rescue her brother. With this in mind, the young Athena began her self-imposed training. Joseph Smith, also known as Judo Joe, her future partner in the Ultimate Super Spies (USA), was her martial arts coach. She became a CIA operative under Miss Espionage codename, often collaborating with American Crusader. Her ultimate goal of returning to East Germany and rescuing her brother never came to pass (her brother actually became a KGB agent).

Miss Espionage trained to become the ultimate secret agent. She was a master of disguise and a fighter capable of taking on more than one man in hand-to-hand combat. She was also an excellent athlete and pilot. She was able to speak fluently in both German and Russian.
