Lee Granger, a brilliant scientist and adventurer, flies over the deep African jungle when his plane malfunctions and crashes. Granger befriends the chieftain of the Mchwa People, a tribe of pygmies, after saving his life. Lee helps the indigenous people build a modern city and defend themselves against arab slave traders. In gratitude, the Mchwa People name him their king. His most faithful companion is Eric, a huge lion that Lee has endowed with almost human intelligence. While breaking up an illegal exotic animal smuggling ring operating from the United States, Granger came into contact with other exceptional individuals like himself:
Black Spider, the scourge of the underworld; Domino Lady, seduction personified; John Aman, the mystic Green Mist; Cosmo Mann, scientific genius and aviator and Brittish Agent 99, the Ace of Spies. The six will form The Vanguard, a secret cabal with a mission to protect the world.
