The man known as British Agent 99 was british citizen and film actor Alan Douglas.
Alan was a famous star in America, but when he receives the news of the death of his father, General Arthur Douglas, in World War I, he returns to London to serve his country. Douglas enlists in the British Secret Service where he is codenamed Agent 99. Douglas conducts espionage missions behind enemy lines, in the Ottoman region and the Balkans, as well as in the newly formed Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Back in the United States, he dismantles a network of German saboteurs in Los Angeles. During that mission he collaborates with Black Spider and Domino Lady. They will soon be joined by Lee Granger (the Lord of the Jungle), John Aman (the mystical Green Mist) and Cosmo Mann (Scientific Genius and Aviator).
The six will form The Vanguard, a secret cabal with the mission to protect the World.
