The ape-demon Rakshasa is a cannibalistic creature resembling a gigantic ape that, according to legend, prowls the jungles of Bengal looking for victims. An expedition led by Professor Vance, of the Smithsonian, travels to the jungle to investigate its existence and if it is possible to get a live specimen. They explore the jungle thoroughly, finding ruins with realistic statues that represent figures of demonic apes. Miraculously, Professor Vance manages to capture what appears to be a Rakshasa. The group carry the captive ape as cargo onto a ship, where a mysterious man in the ship's tavern gives them a statue of Vishnu as a talisman. But Professor Vance discards the statuette and is possessed by the creature, forcing him to release it. Some time later, a ship full of mangled bodies is found stranded off the coast of North America...
