Brock Brenner was a criminal, a professional thug who decided to rise to the major leagues. To achieve this he contacted an individual known by the original nickname of "The Chemist." The Chemist designed two gases for Brock: one was a gas that killed anyone in a matter of seconds; the other, which served as prophylaxis, also provided temporarily inhuman strength and endurance (depending on the concentration of the gas). Brock eliminated the chemist and kept the gas formulas for himself. He then donned an ostentatious bat hood and called himself "Brickbat" and became one of the top hitmen.

The truth is that Brenner was already an above-average thug, by virtue of his intelligence and his cold, implacable character. Thanks to the Chemist he obtained a deadly weapon and a power-up that put him on a paranormal level.
