An orphan boy named John Aman was hosted in a lost monastery in the mountains of Tibet and later chosen by the Council of Seven to be trained in both physical and spiritual perfection. This choice created great resentment in another disciple. Over the years their rivalry grew, until John finally exposed his true evil nature and the rebellious monk was expelled from the lamasery. When John was 25, his training was complete and he was sent to fight evil in the outside world. His old rival, now turned into the mysterous crime lord known as The Big Question, followed in his footsteps and tried to thwart him whenever he could, becoming Aman's greatest nemesis. On returning to the United States, John was helped by Zona Henderson, a female investigator, and her younger brother, the teenager Tommy Henderson. Some time later, Aman would meet other mystery men with whom he would form an alliance, a cabal called The Vanguard, with the noble intention of protecting the world...

The powers that John acquired through hard training and teachings in the lamasery include great strength and control of his body, in addition to certain mental powers, including low-level telepathy and the ability to disappear in a cloud of green vapor. It is because of that last power that he is known as the "Green Mist".
