HISTORY

Robert Blake was a seaplane pilot who was on a remote Pacific island with his fiancee, the anthropologist Joyce Church, his friend, the scientist Harry Thurston, Harry's assistant (Tom Kinsman) and Jack Bradley, the intrepid foreman of the excavation in which all of them worked. The excavation was sabotaged and a terrible explosion occurred. Only Jack Bradley, Joyce Church, Harry Thurston, and Robert himself survived. The explosion disintegrated them, but somehow, the strange materials of the island combined with the energy of the explosion and something in the DNA of the four made them return from nowhere, changed into elemental creatures, living representations of the four states of matter: Gaseous (Joyce), Plasma (Thurston), Solid (Bradley) and Liquid (Blake himself). After a moment of desperation, they discovered that they could control this fantastic transformation simply with force of will. Using their newfound abilities, the four found and confronted the saboteurs, who turned out to be Lava Man and his acolytes. After defeating them, the four decided to stay together, forming the United States of Matter and choosing colorful nicknames by which they would be known: Fearless Flint, Hydro-Man, Blue Flame, and Ariel.

POWERS & WEAPONS

Robert Blake can transform his body or any part of it into water. Bob can control the water that makes up his body in a number of ways. He often emits high pressure blasts of water from his hands, but he seems to prefer to transform into a mini-tsunami and use that form to hit and sweep away his opponents. Evaporation or freezing, while not having serious long-term effects, are not very pleasant for him.
