Yerba Buena, California, 1844. General Jason Burr and Count Ivan Raspinoff attempt to take control of California to turn it into a Russian colony with Burr as dictator. Whoever opposes them ends up dead or a slave in the mines, extracting gold for the tyrants. Don Roberto Maestro, the son of a prosperous landowner, who was out of the country during the uprising, returns home only to find that his father and his younger brother have been murdered and their lands expropriated. With the fire of vengeance burning in his veins, Maestro becomes the masked Águila Negra, organizing local citizens into a militia, "Los Vigilantes de California" to fight the invaders and make Burr and Raspinoff pay for their crimes. Maestro impersonates the church's mannered organist, with the help of Father José, the local priest.
