Mr. Black is actually Noctifer, the twin brother of the fallen angel Lucifer. Both were seraphim, the closest caste of angels to Yahweh, but while Lucifer was beautiful and brilliant, Noctifer was grim, austere, and silent. When his twin started his rebellion, Noctifer simply stood by. When the archangel Michael expelled Lucifer and the other fallen from Heaven, Noctifer was demoted to the lowest caste of angels, the guardian angels. At first Noctifer thought it was an unfair punishment, but he didn't protest. What he did not expect is that little by little he was becoming fond of the human race. Since then, he has served Yahweh as a guardian angel, protecting the souls of countless human beings.

As an angel, Mr. Black possesses powers and abilities that far exceed those of humans:
Noctifer was created over four thousand years ago. He possesses his own physical body, on the outside much like a human being, but on the inside noticeably different. Angels are both physical and spiritual beings, so they can manifest spiritually on Earth, so that only other angels are able to interact with them. In that state, humans are unable to see or touch them. Noctifer is capable of manifesting a pair of enormous feathery wings that unfurl from his upper back, providing him with shielding and flight capability. He has superior reflexes and senses and is inhumanly strong. He is also a skilled fighter, a true sacred warrior capable of easily defeating, without help or weapons, large groups of armed humans. He shares a psychic link with his twin brother Lucifer.
