After WW II, Professor Nagare Yoshiyafu was looking for a way to end the threat of nuclear annihilation. He came up with the idea of altering the human atomic structure to make people immune to radioactivity and resistant enough to survive a nuclear explosion. He needed a human test subject, and he found one in Yakedo Kabuto, known as Dukkuratto ("Wharf Rat"), a former merchant marine suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder since Hiroshima. Feeling that he was too damaged to be good at anything, Kabuto agreed to participate in Professor Nagare's experiment.
However, while conducting the experiment, Professor Nagare accidentally triggered a nuclear reaction. The explosion destroyed his laboratory and everything in it, but Kabuto survived. In an ironic twist of fate, the experiment worked, but because Professor Nagare died, there was no way to duplicate it. However, Kabuto decided to try to carry out the professor's dream and "save all humanity from itself" as the Atomikku Sandāboruto (Atomic Thunderbolt).

In addition to resistance to radiation and physical damage (even nuclear explosions), the Atomic Thunderbolt was able to fly and fire beams of atomic energy, generate explosions with its fists, and create "air waves".
