Foundry worker Patrick Dempsey suffers an unfortunate and horrible accident when a vat of red-hot metal is spilled on him.

HISTORY 

William M. Wisehorse III is the latest in a saga of Mantokas, magic-makers, Indian-American shamans descended from the Coyote Spirit himself. In a solemn ceremony, the would-be Mantoka is bitten by a rattlesnake, "the bite of knowledge," awakening his sleeping secret power. Billy works as a forest guard and uses his powers to protect his heritage, nature, and any innocent who are threatened. Billy received the call from Professor Supermind to become a member of the second Atomic Squad, but in the end he declined to become part of the team (at least full time) because of his duties as Mantoka and as forest guard.

HISTORY 

Jimmy O'Donnell's stepfather was killed by Scorpion, a masked terrorist, member of the Irish Republican Army (IRA). 

He himself was saved by sheer luck, when the criminal mistook the howl of the wind for the scream of a Banshee (a spirit from Irish mythology that serves as a harbinger of death) and escaped from the scene of the crime. Jimmy chased the Scorpion across the Atlantic Ocean to the United States. Using Scorpion's superstition to his advantage, Jimmy disguised himself as a Banshee, cornering the terrorist and defeating him. 

While preparing to return to Ireland, Jimmy was contacted by Professor Supermind, who offered him a position in the second Atomic Squad.

Ayesha, the Sorceress, ruled the Mkuali Kilele Watu ("People of the Shining Peak"), an ancient tribe on the hillside of Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. HISTORY 

Shelia Vernow was the sister of archaeologist Neal Vernow, who with his friend Cliff Barron was searching in Peru for the lost city of gold known as Chicalmo. 

Shelia dreamed that Cliff and Neal had discovered the city, but had been taken prisoner and were going to be sacrificed by the natives. Disturbed by this dream, Shelia immediately left for Peru, but upon arrival she found that the government was preparing to close the tunnel used by Neal's expedition. A native guide named Juan Sinto offers to take her to the lost city in exchange for five thousand US dollars. Shelia accepts the deal, but Sinto takes the money and at the first chance leaves the young woman abandoned in the middle of the jungle. After wandering through the green inferno, the young woman faints from exhaustion. Upon awakening she discovers that she has been taken to Chicalmo. The priest of the Temple of the Flame informs her that she is the one chosen to carry the sacred fire, succeeding the previous bearer. Once in the temple, the former bearer of the sacred fire throws herself into a burning pit where her body is consumed and Shelia is kissed by the flame and transcends, becoming a living deity. Then the priest has Neal and Cliff brought before them to be sacrificed, but Shelia, seeing them, reacts and using her power frees them and the three together escape back to civilization. However, what happened in Chicalmo had changed the young woman forever, in more ways than one and she was compelled to seek the help of Professor Maurice Warren, better known as Professor Supermind. Warren enlisted her in his team, The Atomic Squad.

Icarion's history is a mystery to everyone, including himself. 

Apparently, he is the only known survivor of an ancient civilization now extinct. His body was kept in suspended animation in an underwater palace somewhere in the Pacific Ocean, until a team of archaeologists, assisted by the first Atomic Squad (consisting of King -the Ape-Man-, Ray Cardell -Master Key- and Shelia Vernow- Flame Goddess-), discovered the ruins and woke him up. However, Icarion's awakening had an adverse effect, exploding the cryogenic chamber in which he found himself, causing the underwater palace to collapse. They all managed to escape alive, but Icarion's origins were buried deep in the ocean forever. With no memory or a place to call home, Icarion enlisted in the Atomic Squad. For a long time, he and Ray competed for Shelia's love, but ultimately it was Master Key who hit the jackpot, so to speak.

Professor Sven Carlson was in charge of a Norwegian station at the North Pole. One night, in the middle of a horrible snowstorm, the Professor thought he heard a child cry. The baby, whom he named Thom, grew up healthy and normal (except for his silver hair), until upon entering puberty, he began to develop cryokinetic abilities. Ray Cardwell was victim of an extraordinary incident while visiting his friend's, astronomer Professor Cross, telescope. HISTORY 

After WW II, Professor Nagare Yoshiyafu was looking for a way to end the threat of nuclear annihilation. He came up with the idea of ​​altering the human atomic structure to make people immune to radioactivity and resistant enough to survive a nuclear explosion. He needed a human test subject, and he found one in Yakedo Kabuto, known as Dukkuratto ("Wharf Rat"), a former merchant marine suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder since Hiroshima. Feeling that he was too damaged to be good at anything, Kabuto agreed to participate in Professor Nagare's experiment. 

However, while conducting the experiment, Professor Nagare accidentally triggered a nuclear reaction. The explosion destroyed his laboratory and everything in it, but Kabuto survived. In an ironic twist of fate, the experiment worked, but because Professor Nagare died, there was no way to duplicate it. However, Kabuto decided to try to carry out the professor's dream and "save all humanity from itself" as the Atomikku Sandāboruto (Atomic Thunderbolt).
