Ray Cardwell was victim of an extraordinary incident while visiting his friend's, astronomer Professor Cross, telescope. He was watching the skies through the telescope when suddenly an unidentified energy beam stroke him. Somehow, being exposed to this mysterious energy, gave Ray superhuman powers.
Professor Cross put him in contact with Maurice Warren, aka Professor Supermind, who named him Master Key and made him the leader and first member of his Atomic Squad.
Ray and Shelia Vernow, a teammate in the Squad, fell in love and after some time they get married.
